Last year I really struggled trying to make coherent art, or even art that I wanted to make and was proud of. I am a very avid writer, and I kept trying to include the characters I had created in my art in a way that still pleasing to the eye. I've been developing art and stories in my head for quite a long time, and I am constantly thinking about characters and situations they might find themselves in. I wanted to develop an illustrative style that wasn’t messy and disproportionate for these characters. My thoughts behind my work this summer was to try and conquer both of these problems. My art is based on my characters and their inner thoughts; my doodles and quotes are representative of those thoughts, and the backgrounds are just as demonstrative of my story idea as the drawings themselves.
My art has consistently been whimsical, and I don't think that these pieces stray too far from that distinction. Whether this is good or bad, I'm not sure of yet, but I'm sure it can't hurt to expand out to different things. But I still think that these are the cleanest and most successful pieces that I have made incorporating my characters thus far. Last year I struggled heavily with this, hardly even finishing most of the "character" works that I started. But I am happy with the final result of these pieces, especially because of the finality of them in the first place.
My process for these three works was as follows: I painted a background on a canvas, and then overlaid it with a sheet of tracing paper, already with my character drawn on it. I wanted to keep the drawings as simple as possible; I used black pen for this reason, as well as to make them stand out as much as possible. The paper was actually more translucent in my head than what I put down, but I am still pretty happy with how the final product turned out. Hopefully, I will be able to use these as a stable building block to improve and expand my art in the upcoming future.
