This was a self portrait project. For it, we had two options: we could either find a work of art, or find an artist, view a lot of their pieces, and make a self portrait using their style. I chose the artist Paul Signac, however, I kind-of cheating when it came to the two options. I actually used two of Signac's works: Against the Enamel of Background Rhythmic with Beats and Angels, Tones and Tints and Colors, and a Portrait of Félix Fénéon (Yeah, I know; just a smigen too long of a title) and Place des Lices, Saint Tropez. I made myself the figure in the first artwork, and used the background in the second artwork. I chose Paul when I was looking through a big hulking artist book at the beginning of the unit, searching for a worthy artist/artwork. His artwork (Against the Enamel of Background Rhythmic with Beats and Angels, Tones and Tints and Colors, and a Portrait of Félix Fénéon) was the title page for a section, and it instantly popped out at me. It was colorful and very, very detailed and precise, and I loved the style (Neo Impressionism/Pointillism), as it is one of those that tricks the human eye. I'm fascinated by illusions, and this is certainly a type of one. I learned much about Paul Signac, including that he was friends with artists more well known than he was, like Georges Seurat. I also learned how patient you have to be when you paint Pointillism, and I am not a patient person at all, so this was a big challenge for me. I am, however, very pleased with the final result. Here's a link to the Prezi I had to create for this project: http://prezi.com/nhe6jmc55t0k/paul-signac/ |
